The 1999 ESACT conference in Lugano gave a diverse overview on cell culture technologies. Dr. Leonard Hayflick, an early pioneer in animal cell technology gave an excellent and highly relevant historic account when he discussed WI-38 and related human diploid cell substrates that were considered “dangerous” for the production of polio virus in the late 1950s and early1960s. 40 to 50 years later, fears associated with animal cell culture have been finally put behind and more relaxed and goal driven and pragmatic approaches to cultivated animal cells have become evident. Improvement of yields and metabolic engineering were the strongest sessions at this conference and attracted and generated many contributions. A new chapter in animal cell technology was finally introduced as a session at an ESACT conference – transient gene expression. For the purpose of scale-up, non-viral and inexpensive delivery vehicles had been developed that allow producing significant amounts of proteins in shorter time. Also, tissue engineering as a new and rapidly growing section of cell technology were introduced with a small but highly attractive session.
