Since October 2005 Thomas Noll holds the only chair for cell culture technology in Germany at the University of Bielefeld and succeeded Jürgen Lehmann in this position. His research group of more than 25 scientists, PhD students and technicians focuses on the development of advanced fermentation processes for the production of recombinant proteins using genetically modified mammalian cells. This includes the development and use of functional genomic techniques, e.g. transcriptomics, differential proteomics (DIGE) and intracellular metabolomics, as these methods provide a unique perspective on the functioning of mammalian cells. Major applications are rational process optimisation, metabolic engineering and understanding cellular reactions to certain cultivation conditions. Since October 2010 Thomas is also scientific director of the Bielefeld Centre for Biotechnology (CeBiTec), a research cluster focussing on genomics in biotechnology.
Being a chemist by education Thomas early moved into cell culture technology and was head of cell culture technology group at the institute of biotechnology 2 (director: Prof. Christian Wandrey), Research Centre Jülich and visiting scientist at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund, London before moving to Bielefeld.
